Amazon has announced the launch of a romance line, Montlake Romance. It will lead off with a novel by Rita-winner Connie Brockway, which will be published in all formats including print.

More genre lines are on the way, starting with fantasy and science fiction.  We know because Amazon just hired former Del Rey editor Chris Schluep. And if any doubt lingers, Amazon exec Jeff Belle states in the press release that “romance is one of our biggest and fastest growing categories, particularly among Kindle customers. We also know our customers enjoy genre fiction of all kinds, so we are busy building publishing businesses that will focus on additional genres as well.”

If Amazon has any qualms about competing with its own content providers on its march to become Masters of the Publishing Universe, we haven’t noticed. We won’t be surprised to learn they’ve acquired a romance entitled Mistress of the Universe.
